Welcome to the "Institut d’Etudes Avancees de Paris"

The Institut d’Études Avancées – Paris is supported by the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH), in collaboration with the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and the École Normale Supérieure (ENS). These three large institutions, all major players in the field of research, accompanied and supported the development of the “golden age” of French SHS, which enlightened the entire world with the works of a few of the most eminent researchers of the 20th century. It is therefore only natural that these three institutions should form the backbone of IEA Paris. Application Submit your application online. You can submit your application to the IEA by filling out the form below.

Your application should include: A complete and up-to-date curriculum vitae A bibliography highlighting the publications most relevant for the project proposal A research project proposal (5-15 pages) that matches the five working modes for IEA-Paris’s scientific activities (the five working modes) The status of past or present work with French universities or research institutions. N.B.: The completed application must be submitted six to twelve months before the expected starting date of the guest researcher’s residency.

Evaluation procedure Each application is initially examined by IEA-Paris’s Director and the Oversight Committee. The application is then sent to two outside experts for evaluation, then to several (i.e. two to four) members of the Scientific Council for final approval. At the same time, a summary of the research project is sent to each of the Scientific Council’s members. At the end of this process, the Director, in light of the Scientific Council’s conclusions, will decide to begin to elaborate and define the terms of the working programme and residency with the selected candidate(s). Following this process, a formal invitation is issued to the applicant.

Formal invitation After a candidate has been selected, IEA-Paris’s administration sends him or her a special file comprising the following:

A formal letter of invitation from the Director to the selected candidate(s), indicating the dates and conditions of the residency at IEA-Paris; In some cases, depending on applicable regulations, a Protocole d’Accueil (see example) will be sent to the candidate. This residency contract must then be signed by the French Ambassador or Consulate in the guest researcher’s country of residence. N.B.: Guest researchers at IEA-Paris must make arrangements to purchase private insurance to cover the risks incurred during their travel to and stay in Paris. Otherwise, an insurance policy will be offered to them for purchase upon arrival in France.
